Congress (I) has criticized Mayawati’s government move for raising a special force for memorial protection. This move has evoked a sharp reaction from the UP Congress (I) unit as well. Congress (I) has questioned the intent of the chief minister, holding her responsible for ruining the already weak economy of the state to satisfy her fancies. The spokesperson of UP Congress (I) unit said that when it comes to needs of BPL card holders, chief minister Mayawati has been claiming all along that the actual number of those living below poverty line in Uttar Pradesh was many times higher than projected. If she is actually interested in poor people, then the CM should cater to their needs instead of spending millions of rupees on stone and granite. The memorial and the proposed force was an insult to the starving multitudes of Dalits, Congress (I) said. People feel this is nothing but indulging in showy symbolism by Mayawati.
