Congress (I) has blamed Mayawati government for large scale scam going on in old age and widows’ pension scheme in Uttar Pradesh. The scheme is meant to provide social security to persons of old age and widows who do not have any source for their livelihood. Such persons are provided pension of Rs 300 per month. For instance in Bahreich district there are 86035 beneficiaries of this scheme. On scrutiny it was found nearly 20,000 beneficiaries were bogus. Apart from this 2,500 people had died but pensions were being released in their names. In Azamgarh district 28 people including 26 women were found to be drawing pension on the basis of fraudulent documents. So much so in one case the village pradhan was found to have connived with pension scheme officials to secure pension to non-entitled persons. Thus Mayawati government has deprived the deserving people of the benefits of the welfare scheme, said Congress (I).
