Congress (I) has said that ‘dalits’, OBCs and minority communities have now realized that they have been cheated by Mayawati’s BSP government. ‘Dalits’ supported Mayawati in the hope that she would be able to protect them from predators and sharks in the society. But what has happened is that police under the Mayawati government have either shielded the culprits or are themselves involved in sexual crimes against ‘Dalit’ women. Congress (I) says Mayawati has defrauded the ‘Dalits’ and shattered their dreams for social and legal justice. Dalits still remain one of the most vulnerable sections. The chief minister is not embarrassed to note sexual crime figures against her own community. Recently a shocking incident of gouging out the eyes and blinding a 13-year-old girl took place. She had resisted rape in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district by two youths. This shook the entire nation. But all that Mayawati’s government did then in a knee-jerk reaction was to order the suspension of the two police personnel who had allegedly refused to register a complaint.
